Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel and Villas 5*, Saadiyat Island (UAE)

The welcome that genuinely caught me off guard

I've checked into a lot of hotels, and very few have managed to surprise me the way Park Hyatt did. I walked into my room and found photos from my own Instagram printed and waiting on the table. Actual prints, laid out for me. I just stood there for a second. The bed was scattered with rose petals, there was a basket of fresh berries by the window, and a box of artisanal chocolates as a gift. I've been doing this long enough to spot a generic gesture, and this was not that. Someone had paid attention. It's the sweetest welcome I've had in a long time, and it set the tone for everything that followed.

A balcony that actually gives you privacy

My balcony looked straight out over the beach and the pool, which on its own would have been enough. But what made it for me were the high walls on either side, proper privacy, the kind you rarely get on a hotel balcony. I could have my coffee out there in the morning without feeling like I was on display to every other room. A small design choice, but the sort of thing that tells you a hotel was built by people who think about how guests actually use the space.

The beach, the pools, and the smartest sunbed layout I've seen

The beach here is exceptional. Soft, clean, and the water is that clear Saadiyat blue that makes you forget you're fifteen minutes from a city. The main pool is genuinely luxurious. But the detail I keep telling people about is the sunbed layout: the beds are spaced well apart, so you're never lying on top of strangers. Better still, there are little pockets dotted around with their own small pools, some with just two or four sunbeds tucked into them. You can claim one of those and feel like you have your own private corner of the resort. It's such a thoughtful touch, and it's exactly the kind of thing that separates a good five-star from a great one.

The wellness facilities are worth your time

I made full use of the indoor heated plunge pool with its jacuzzi, which was lovely and warm. I also tried the steam room, and my favourite small discovery were the heated black stone loungers. You lie back on the warm stone and feel every bit of tension leave. Another nice touch I wasn't expecting. The gym is huge and fully equipped, so if you train while you travel like I do, you won't be making excuses here.

Dinner that doesn't behave like a buffet

The buffet dinner is not what that word usually brings to mind. The tuna steak was cooked fresh, exactly to how I like it, and as a pescatarian I notice the seafood the moment I walk in, so the seafood bar had my full attention. There's a serious cheese selection too. What stands out is the quality of the ingredients: you can see it and you can taste it. This is the kind of spread that makes staying in for dinner an easy decision rather than a compromise.

Breakfast: partly à la carte, fully worth it

I loved that breakfast is partly à la carte, so I treated it as an excuse to try more than one thing. Day one was avocado on toast; day two was a truffle omelette with spinach. I genuinely can't pick a favourite, both were delicious, and having dishes made to order in the morning is a small luxury that makes a real difference.

Park Hyatt Saadiyat got the big things right and then went and nailed all the small ones too. Between the welcome, the privacy, the beach, the wellness facilities, and the food, this is a resort that understands quiet, considered luxury. If you're choosing where to stay on Saadiyat, this one belongs firmly at the top of the list.
